Linsay at work on the Big Bowl |
These were some of the comments of the eighty-four participants who attended the 2002 Turnout at Proserpine, when they saw the highlight of the woodturning workshop, an eight foot six wide by two foot six deep bowl still mounted on its lathe ready for anyone game enough to try their hand at some large scale turning. |
Fifty odd people had already been to the first Turnout the year before, so everyone was soon settled in and making newcomers feel welcome.
Linsay Dunn and Ernie Neuman were our guest turners for the weekend, sharing their knowledge and turning skill sfreely with all under the huge tent that housed over forty lathes and other assorted gear. Ernie and Linsay both gave their time free of charge which was very generious and was greatly appreciated by all there. |
Nigel getting it right, as usual. |
A sharing of ideas, gear and techniques is the idea of the workshop and this created a hive of activity for the whole weekend, with everyone to benefit from it.
The turners were asked to turn a "doll" during the weekend, these to be given to children with special needs. What a great collection this became with most "dressed" and with faces and features burnt on by the ladies. Doug of the Clermont club was judged winner of this project, with his solider, complete with slouch hat!!. |
The teams race once again provided lots of fun and of course a chance to do a lot of cheating. The challenge was to produce a set of cricket stumps and ball in the shortest time. Linsay's team won by a country mile, but as is the norm the contest was resolved by bowling down of the stamps. After some time the winning team was declared. |
Which is the best cricket ball and stumps??? |
The Saturday evening B.B.Q. up at the water's edge, served with Red Claw entree and drinks, provided a nice break from the camp, especially with Jock of the Keppel club giving us some homegrown music on the mouth organ. Back at the hall Linsay conducted a very interesting and entertaining slide show of his workshop and spectacular turnings. Sunday came all too quickly with the final awards and certificates being handed out to a very happy group of people, who also to a person promised to be back for the Turnout of 2003. |
